Membership Type

Please select the appropriate membership type below.

Associate: You a Canadian citizen or permanent resident engaged in writing or editing as a personal interest, developing the craft of writing, or beginning to put together a body of published work.

Affiliate: Select this type if you do not qualify as an Associate or Professional member and you are:

  • engaged in a related field such as publishing, bookselling, printing, education, other media, public relations, etc.;
  • a church or public librarian;
  • an avid reader;
  • not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada;
  • or you simply wish to show support and to keep updated through receiving member mailings and materials

Professional Membership: Canadian citizen or permanent resident who agrees with our statement of faith and (a) is employed full-time as a writer or editor or (b) has produced a sufficient body of published work to accumulate a total of 50 points according to our professional member assessment. Download the Professional Assessment Word document, to use as a worksheet to tally your publishing credits. Please send the completed Word document as an attachment  by email: info[at]thewordguild.com.

Student Membership: Full-time students who are writing for personal interest, developing the craft of writing, or beginning to put together a body of work that you hope to publish. Student memberships include College, University and Seminary Students currently enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited college, university or seminary, and are working on their undergraduate or graduate degree.

Who can Join?

The Word Guild is a community for people who love the written word—writers, editors, and anyone working with or passionate about books, publishing, and communication.

Our members include a wide range of creatives and professionals: from unpublished writers and students to experienced authors, editors, poets, magazine contributors, digital content creators, corporate communicators, and more. While many members are Christian, the writing produced within our community spans a variety of genres and topics, both faith-based and general interest.

Membership is open to individuals who:

Membership Categories

The Word Guild offers several membership categories designed to reflect where you are in your writing, editing, or publishing journey. Each category provides full access to our community, resources, and events, with eligibility based on your level of experience and professional involvement.

If you’re unsure which category applies to you, the descriptions below will help guide your choice.

Student Member

$30 per year

Eligibility Requirements

For students in full-time post-secondary or seminary studies who are developing their writing or editing skills. Ideal for those beginning to build a body of work.

To qualify for Student Membership, applicants must:

  • Be currently enrolled in full-time post-secondary or seminary studies
  • Be actively pursuing studies related to writing, editing, communications, publishing, or a related field
  • Have an interest in developing writing or editorial skills within a learning environment

Proof of enrolment may be required upon application or renewal.

Associate Member

$65 per year

Eligibility Requirements

For writers who are actively developing their craft and building experience, but are not yet established as professional authors or editors. Associate members may be working toward publication or growing a portfolio of creative or editorial work.

To qualify for Associate Membership, applicants must:

  • Have an interest in writing or editing as a primary or developing pursuit
  • Be actively working on writing projects, building a portfolio, or developing publishing experience
  • Not yet meet the criteria for Professional Membership

Associate Membership is intended for emerging writers who are growing in skill, experience, and publication history.

Affiliate Member

$65 per year

Eligibility Requirements

For individuals involved in fields related to writing and publishing, such as communications, bookselling, libraries, media, or publishing support roles. This category also includes those who support The Word Guild but are not primarily working as writers or editors. International members may also join under this category.

To qualify for Affiliate Membership, applicants must:

  • Be involved in a profession or field related to writing, publishing, or communications (such as editing, bookselling, libraries, media, or publishing support roles)
    OR
  • Be individuals who support the mission and community of The Word Guild but are not primarily working as writers or editors
    OR
  • Be international members who wish to participate in The Word Guild community

This category is designed for those connected to the broader literary and publishing ecosystem.

Professional Member

$105 per year

Eligibility Requirements

For established writers and editors who are actively working in the industry and have a demonstrated body of published work. Professional members are typically earning income from writing, editing, or publishing-related work or have significant professional publishing experience.

To qualify for Professional Membership, applicants must:

  • Be actively working as a writer and/or editor in a professional capacity
  • Have a demonstrated body of published work (in print or digital formats)
  • Show evidence of sustained engagement in writing, editing, or publishing as a significant part of their professional activity (see criteria chart below)

Professional Membership is intended for established writers and editors with a consistent publication record or professional writing career.

To qualify as a professional member of The Word Guild, you must have a sufficient body of work. Any combination of the following, that totals 50 points, qualifies you for professional membership.

Note: Works cited in the professional membership application must have been published/produced/performed (i.e., works in progress don’t count).

1 point per 5 minutes of performance time

Published books of fewer than 40,000 words

15 points each

Published books of more than 40,000 words

25 points each

Poetry

2 points for every poem published in a paying market(1 poem per issue of a publication)

Song Lyrics

2 points for every song lyric that has been published, or produced on a recording made for sale to the public

Editing

1 point for every four hours of paid editorial work
