I am “the Other”: May I Tell You a Story? Creative nonfiction and the art of cultural storytelling
Brent van Staalduinen
With very few exceptions, the moment we step away from our home communities, we are immersed in cultures that are different from our own. We inevitably become “the Other,” instantly recognizable as Outsider or Foreigner, which keeps us from fully seeing or immersing ourselves in that culture’s social milieu. The desire to tell stories, however, is universal, and when we allow ourselves to speak, write, and listen with story in mind, our “otherness” need not be a barrier to approaching cultures other than our own.
For those of us seeking to tell true stories about other places and people, the elements of language and story—plot, character, setting, metaphor, and so on—can do more than just deliver facts and arguments: they can become essential tools with which we communicate what we see and have learned.
This workshop will introduce creative nonfiction as an effective method to write about—and tell the stories of—the cultures in which we find ourselves.
